Swisscharge condemns excessively high roaming costs and advocates for fair pricing conditions. Due to the multitude of players (mobility service providers, charging station operators, roaming hubs, and various technology providers), roaming is currently still quite complex - and therefore unfortunately more expensive than charging within the Swisscharge network.
You probably already know roaming from your mobile phone. To use your phone, you first need a mobile provider. You choose a SIM card and perhaps a phone subscription. When you use the Swiss mobile network, you pay your provider's rate. At the end of the month, you receive a bill.
It’s different when you want to make calls or use mobile data abroad. For using the "foreign" mobile network, so-called roaming fees are charged – your provider bills you for these. Roaming in "foreign" charging networks works in principle exactly the same way.
Swisscharge offers you the largest charging network in Switzerland. If you still use a publicly accessible charging station that does not belong to our Network , you will be charged a roaming fee. This is made up of agreements between the involved charging network providers (EMPs), charging station operators (CPOs), roaming hubs, and technology providers.
Roaming allows you as an e-car driver to access a multitude of publicly accessible charging stations in Switzerland and abroad, regardless of your provider. Simply register at the charging station with your Swisscharge app or RFID charging card, charge, and then view all transactions in the app. This way, you have full cost control.
To ensure that authentication and billing run smoothly, various charging station networks cooperate in the background. Roaming prices are thus contractually agreed. The influence on other providers, especially abroad, is rather small. Therefore, when roaming, it is particularly important that you briefly check the price in the Swisscharge App before each charging process.
In Switzerland: Check the Swisscharge app to locate in-network charging stations near you. This way, you can largely avoid roaming fees.
Abroad: Sometimes there is no way around it, for example, if you go on vacation with your e-car. In the Swisscharge app, you can always find the applicable charging prices for you. Important: Pay attention to blocking and time fees if leaving your car at a charging station for extended periods.
Best Practice: Before your trip, check where the next charging station is on your route and enter the charging station directly into the navigation system.
If we suddenly removed roaming, e-drivers in Switzerland and Europe would lose access to thousands of charging stations overnight or require a new user account and local payment methods for each charging network.
At Swisscharge, we actively work to offer you the most reliable charging network and the best charging conditions - so that roaming in the future is as easy as with mobile phones.
